John Dermer’s first love has always been with the frustratingly difficult but addictive process of salt glazing. This technique, developed in the 14th century, is practiced today by only a select and dedicated few.
Dermer began working with the salt glaze process in 1967 and continues to pursue this field today. Failures in the harsh salt glaze kiln have led to amazing surfaces being developed in John’s work. Surfaces not seen before in the long 700 year history of salt glazing.
His years of research and experience in this area were rewarded in 2006 when he won the highly prestigious Saltzbrand Keramik International Award in Koblenz, Germany.
John continues to work in porcelain, which complicates the salt glaze process even more!
